EFFECT OF STUDY HABITS ON THE ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT OF BIOLOGY STUDENTS IN ONITSHA EDUCATION ZONE OF ANAMBRA STATE

Abstract


The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of study habit on student academic achievement of biology students in Onitsha Education zone of Anambra state. Two research questions and two null hypotheses were formulated to guide the study. The design of the study was quasi-experimental design which entails pretest, post test and non-randomization. The population of the study was 4080 senior secondary two (SS2) students. The sample of the study was 150 biology SS2 students from two single sex schools and two co-educational schools. (70 males and 80 females) were purposely drawn. Purposive sampling was adopted to choose the co-educational schools and the single sex schools. Data was collected using Biology Achievement Test (BAT) which was constructed by the researcher and study habit inventory (SHI) which was adopted. The instruments were validated by science education lecturers and department of lecturers from measurement and Evaluation. The reliability of  the instrument was ensured using Cronbach Alpha coefficient of 0.80 for SHI and 0.96 for BAT. Data were analyzed using mean and standard deviation to answer research questions and analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) for testing the two null hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. The result of the findings from the analyses in respect to experimental and control groups showed that there is relationship between students’ academic and study habit. In the other hand, gender has a great effect on students study habit. Among other recommendations made was that the use of good study habit should be persistent so that the students can derive maximum benefit from their uses with reference to academic achievement.
